PARIS — Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the U.S. may withdraw from efforts to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia if there is no breakthrough in the coming days.
Speaking after U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials met in Paris, Rubio called the talks “constructive” but warned a decision on whether to continue will come “in a matter of days.”
“We’re reaching a point where we need to decide whether this is even possible,” Rubio said. “If it’s not, then I think we’re just going to move on. It’s not our war.”
The remarks come as the U.S. and Ukraine near a minerals deal tied to ongoing negotiations. While Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism from Rome, Russia signaled limited engagement, stating it remains “open to dialogue” but offering few specifics.
Recent talks have centered on a now-lapsed 30-day ceasefire and broader efforts to halt the war, which has killed thousands and rattled global security. Despite repeated U.S. pressure, Russia has rejected a permanent truce unless Ukraine halts mobilization and Western arms shipments — conditions Kyiv refuses.
Rubio suggested next week’s planned meeting in London may determine the U.S.’s future role.
