Man Stranded After Breaking Leg in Backcountry Terrain
An Idaho Army National Guard helicopter crew successfully rescued an injured man stranded in the rugged wilderness near Yellow Pine on Tuesday night, after he was unable to leave the area due to a broken leg.
The man had been riding a dirt bike in mountainous terrain when the injury occurred. The steep and heavily wooded location made it impossible for a civilian Life Flight helicopter to land at the scene.
Black Hawk Team Deploys for Remote Air Rescue
The 183rd Assault Helicopter Battalion from the Idaho Army National Guard responded to the call for assistance from the Valley County Sheriff’s Office. Using a UH-60 Black Hawk, the crew located the injured individual, who had lit a small fire to help rescuers find him.
Sgt. 1st Class Jade Parsons was lowered to the site using the helicopter’s hoist system. Parsons stabilized the man’s injured leg and conducted a tandem hoist extraction using a rescue vest.
Patient Transferred for Civilian Medical Care
After extraction, the man was flown to Reed Ranch Airstrip, where he was transferred to civilian medical personnel for further treatment.
Ongoing Support from the Idaho National Guard
This rescue underscores the critical support role played by the Idaho Army National Guard in assisting local agencies with difficult or inaccessible search and rescue operations in Idaho’s vast and rugged wilderness.
