Mountain Lion Located After Initial Report
A mountain lion reported within Lewiston city limits on February 1 was located during the early morning hours of February 3, according to Idaho Fish and Game.
Officials said the animal was found about one mile from the location of the original sighting. Based on its size and location, it was believed to be the same mountain lion previously observed.
Decision Made Due to Public Safety Concerns
Idaho Fish and Game, with assistance from the Lewiston Police Department, determined that chemical immobilization could not be conducted safely.
Because the animal was located in an area that posed risks to the public, officials decided to humanely euthanize the mountain lion.
Wildlife Response Process Explained
Idaho Fish and Game stated that lethal removal is not taken lightly.
The agency said public safety is the primary consideration when responding to wildlife incidents in urban or residential areas. Each situation is evaluated individually based on the conditions at the scene and the information available at the time.
Regional Context
The incident occurred within Idaho Fish and Game’s Clearwater Region.
The agency regularly responds to wildlife encounters across the region, including reports involving large predators near populated areas.
