Weather Forecast for East Idaho
Residents of east Idaho should prepare for wet and windy weather conditions this week. The National Weather Service in Pocatello has forecasted a mix of rain and snow, along with strong winds, affecting various parts of the region.
Monday’s Mild Start
The week will begin with mild weather on Monday, featuring breezy conditions and temperatures in the 40s across most of the Snake River Plain. This calm start will give way to more severe weather as the week progresses.
Storm System Arrives Tuesday
A storm system is expected to move in after midnight early Tuesday, bringing a combination of rain and snow that will continue through Wednesday afternoon. The Interstate 15 and U.S. Highway 20 corridor, stretching from Pocatello to Rexburg and St. Anthony, is likely to experience rain, with precipitation levels reaching under a tenth of an inch.
Precipitation in Lower Valleys
In the lower valleys, such as Teton Valley, Island Park, Soda Springs, Bear Lake, Malad, and McCammon, a quarter- to half-inch of moisture is anticipated. Most of this will fall as rain, with minimal snow expected. Significant snow accumulation is predicted only at elevations above 7,500 feet.
Snowfall in Mountainous Areas
Mountainous regions, including Soda Springs and Lava Hot Springs, could see up to 2 inches of snow. Higher elevations might receive between 4 and 10 inches. Areas around Island Park and Driggs will encounter a mix of rain and snow, with snowfall ranging from 1 to 3 inches.
Impact on Mountain Passes
Travelers should be cautious when crossing mountain passes during the storm. Pine Creek Pass might see 3 to 5 inches of snow, while Targhee and Raynolds Passes could receive 2 to 5 inches. Emigration Summit in the Bear River Range may accumulate 3 to 6 inches of snow.
Windy Conditions Across the Region
The entire east Idaho region will experience windy conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with gusts ranging from 30 to 50 mph. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the 40s and 50s.
Weather Outlook for the Rest of the Week
As the week progresses, some mountain areas may experience passing showers. Light showers are possible on Friday and Saturday, although most of east Idaho is likely to remain dry. Friday could be particularly windy, with conditions similar to those on Wednesday.
Temperatures in the valley from Thursday through Saturday are predicted to range between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
