Idaho House of Representatives Votes for Budget Cuts
The Idaho House of Representatives has approved a measure to reduce the state’s budget by 4% for most agencies in the current fiscal year. This decision was made during a session held on March 10, 2025, at the Idaho Capitol Building in Boise. The vote resulted in a 48-22 majority in favor of the cuts.
Details of Senate Bill 1331
The budget reductions are part of Senate Bill 1331, also known as the fiscal year 2026 budget rescission act. The bill proposes a total reduction of $192.7 million in state funding, with $131.3 million being cut from the general fund. These measures are intended to address ongoing revenue uncertainties and accommodate federal tax cuts.
Support and Opposition
Proponents of the bill argue that these cuts are crucial for maintaining a balanced budget. House Majority Leader Jason Monks, R-Meridian, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized its necessity. He stated, “It’s a challenging bill that we have to vote on, but it’s a necessary bill.”
Governor’s Decision Pending
The approved budget cuts will now be presented to Governor Brad Little for final consideration. Governor Little, who recently announced his re-election campaign, faces a significant decision regarding the bill. His office, along with the Idaho Division of Financial Management, has expressed concerns that the additional 1% cut may adversely affect essential services.
Governor Little will have five days to decide whether to sign the bill into law, veto it, or allow it to become law without his signature. If he chooses to veto the bill, the Idaho Legislature could potentially override the veto with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate.
Senate’s Narrow Approval
While the House showed strong support for the budget cuts, the Senate’s decision was much closer. On March 2, the Idaho Senate passed Senate Bill 1331 with a narrow 18-17 vote. This slim margin highlights the divided opinions on the necessity and impact of the proposed reductions.
Future Budget Considerations
Senate Bill 1331 is just the first of two budget reduction proposals under review by the Idaho Legislature. Additional discussions and decisions are expected as lawmakers continue to navigate the state’s financial challenges.
