Search Underway After Avalanche in Sierra Nevada
Rescue teams in Northern California are continuing efforts to locate nine backcountry skiers reported missing following an avalanche near Lake Tahoe.
The incident occurred near Castle Peak in the Sierra Nevada. Authorities said the avalanche struck a guided skiing group traveling through a popular backcountry area.
Group Was on Multi-Day Guided Trip
Officials said the group included 15 people, including four professional guides.
The skiers were nearing the end of a three-day trip and were returning toward a trailhead when the avalanche occurred. The group had been staying at huts near Frog Lake outside Truckee, California.
Six Skiers Rescued After Overnight Shelter
Six members of the group were able to make contact with rescue teams Tuesday afternoon.
They sheltered at the site for roughly 12 hours using emergency equipment until responders reached them late Tuesday night. Two of the rescued skiers were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Avalanche Warnings Were in Effect
Backcountry avalanche warnings were in place across large portions of the Sierra Nevada at the time of the incident.
Forecasters reported that nearly three feet of snow had fallen near the Castle Peak area in the two days prior to the avalanche. Rapid snowfall and strong winds were cited as contributing factors to unstable snow conditions.
Weather Conditions Hampering Rescue Efforts
Emergency responders faced difficult conditions, including low visibility, continued snowfall, and high winds.
Rescue teams used skis and specialized snow vehicles to reach the site. Helicopter access was limited due to weather and terrain.
Forecasters warned that heavy snowfall could continue through midweek, increasing the risk of additional avalanches and slowing search operations.
Region Facing Severe Winter Storm Impacts
Authorities said mountain conditions in the region have been among the most severe seen in recent years.
Sections of major highways were closed, and some ski resorts suspended operations due to safety concerns. Officials urged the public to avoid backcountry travel during the storm period.
Avalanche Fatalities Remain a National Safety Concern
Avalanche experts report that dozens of avalanche-related deaths occur in the United States each year.
Earlier this winter, fatal avalanches were reported in the same mountain region, highlighting the persistent dangers associated with unstable snowpacks and severe winter weather.
