Dennis Lake’s Induction into the Hall of Fame
Dennis Lake, a long-time rancher from Moreland, Idaho, is set to be inducted into the Eastern Idaho Agriculture Hall of Fame. At 88 years old, Lake is one of six individuals being recognized for their significant contributions to the agricultural community in eastern Idaho. The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 20 at the Shoshone-Bannock Hotel and Event Center in Fort Hall.
Lake’s Contributions to Agriculture
Lake is the founder of Snake River Livestock Company and Lake Family Ranches, a cattle feedlot with a capacity for 9,000 head. His career in agriculture spans over six decades, during which he also owned and partnered in the Blackfoot Livestock Auction. In addition to his agricultural pursuits, Lake served as a member of the Idaho House of Representatives, further demonstrating his commitment to the community.
The Hall of Fame’s Role
The Eastern Idaho Agriculture Hall of Fame, established in 1972, aims to honor individuals who have shown dedication, leadership, and made substantial contributions to agriculture in the region. The selection process involves nominations and voting by the board of directors of the Hall of Fame. Lake himself served on this board for 38 years, gaining firsthand experience with its operations.
Lake’s Reflections on the Honor
While Lake is modest about his upcoming induction, he acknowledges the significance of the recognition. He believes that many others are equally deserving of this honor. Lake’s humility reflects his lifelong dedication to his work and his community.
Family Legacy and Future
Lake’s journey in agriculture began in 1959 when he established the Snake River Livestock Company. Initially starting with a purebred pig operation, the ranch eventually transitioned to cattle. Today, although Lake remains involved in the business, his sons Bruce and Tracy have taken over ownership. His oldest son, Rodney, is a potato grower in the Burley area.
As a first-generation rancher, Lake expresses hope that the family business will continue into the next generation. He mentions the possibility of involving his granddaughters in the operation, highlighting the importance of family in sustaining the ranch’s legacy.
Early Life and Influences
Dennis Lake was born on October 5, 1937, in Rigby, Idaho. His father, James Morgan Jr., served as the town’s postmaster for over 40 years and was actively involved in community service, including roles on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Rigby Lion’s Club. Lake’s grandfather, James Morgan Lake Sr., was a dairyman who owned a ranch in Hamer and Kilgore, where a young Dennis gained early experience with cattle.
Lake’s upbringing in a family deeply rooted in agriculture and community service laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the industry.
