Kremlin Reacts to Trump’s ‘Crazy’ Putin Remarks After Record Russian Air Assault

Trump Slams Putin Over Ukraine Strikes; Russia Accuses U.S. Leader of “Emotional Overload”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — May 27, 2025 — The Kremlin has pushed back after President Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin “absolutely crazy” in the wake of Moscow’s largest combined drone and missile strike since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

“Something has happened to him. He’s gone absolutely crazy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday, referring to Putin’s order to launch 367 drones and missiles, killing at least 13 civilians. “Needlessly killing a lot of people.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded Monday, attributing Trump’s remarks to “emotional overload.” He added that the strikes were in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure.

Russia Launches Record Drone Attack as Conflict Escalates

Between Sunday night and Monday morning, Russian forces launched 355 drones at Ukrainian targets, killing 10 more people, according to Ukraine’s air force. Kyiv labeled the action a “political choice” by Putin, with President Volodymyr Zelensky stating the strikes served no clear military purpose.

In response, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Ukraine’s allies have now lifted range limits on weapon systems provided to Ukraine. The move potentially paves the way for Germany to deliver long-range Taurus missiles, previously withheld over escalation concerns.

Trump Signals Tougher Sanctions, Warns of Putin’s Endgame

While reiterating that he had “always gotten along” with Putin, Trump condemned the strikes and suggested he may escalate U.S. sanctions. “If he wants all of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, that will lead to the downfall of Russia,” he warned.

Trump also criticized Zelensky’s rhetoric during the ongoing conflict, saying the Ukrainian president was “doing his country no favours by talking the way he does.”

Talks Resume, but Little Progress Toward Ceasefire

Despite public tensions, the Kremlin acknowledged the U.S. role in restarting peace discussions. Peskov expressed gratitude to “President Trump personally” for his involvement.

A recent phone call between Trump and Putin reportedly focused on a proposed 30-day ceasefire. While Ukraine has agreed to the pause, Russia has committed only to crafting a “memorandum” on potential future talks — a move Kyiv views as stalling.

The first face-to-face negotiations since 2022 took place in Istanbul on May 16, but aside from a prisoner swap, little ground has been gained.
