New Temple Planned for Coeur d’Alene
COEUR D’ALENE, ID — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced plans to construct a new temple in Coeur d’Alene. The temple will be located on a 10.91-acre parcel at the corner of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard and is expected to be completed within three years.
The planned structure will feature a nearly 30,000-square-foot, single-story temple with an attached spire, along with a meetinghouse and an additional support building.
A Growing Presence in North Idaho
The Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple will be the 10th temple in the state. North Idaho is home to seven stakes and 56 congregations of Latter-day Saints, spanning from Lewiston to Sandpoint.
Brad Moss, president of the Post Falls Idaho Stake, expressed that the selected location felt “inspired” and is conveniently situated for members across the region.
Temple Access and Design
Latter-day Saint temples are distinct from regular meetinghouses. They are open only to church members in good standing and serve specific spiritual purposes such as worship, marriage ceremonies, and baptisms.
The new temple will:
- Not host large congregational gatherings
- Operate primarily with small groups throughout the day
- Remain closed on Sundays, when members attend local worship services
Concerns about traffic have been addressed, with leaders emphasizing the low-impact, staggered use of the facility.
Architecture Reflects Local Inspiration
The temple’s design will incorporate architectural and natural elements inspired by the surrounding region. According to local LDS leaders, the design reflects Idaho’s unique environment and community aesthetics.
“This is a joyful moment for both Latter-day Saints and our friends and neighbors throughout the area,” said Elder Hal C. Hunsaker, a regional church authority. “The temple grounds will always be a place of peace and beauty.”
Existing and Upcoming Temples in Idaho
The new Coeur d’Alene location will join a growing list of LDS temples across the state, including locations in:
- Boise
- Idaho Falls
- Pocatello
- Meridian
- Rexburg
- Twin Falls
- Burley
- Montpelier
- Caldwell
- Teton River (announced)
Community Significance
“This is an emotional thing for the church,” Moss stated. “Having one here in Coeur d’Alene is a profound blessing and a reflection of the faith and devotion of our members. We hope it will also be a source of beauty and peace for the entire community.”
