QUEBEC, Canada — U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that the removal of Russia from the Group of Eight in 2014 was, in his view, a “mistake.” Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as the Group of Seven (G7) summit commenced, Trump reiterated his longstanding position on trade and international cooperation.
The comment comes as G7 leaders gather in Canada for their first meeting since President Trump returned to office. The summit marks the inaugural appearance for several heads of state and occurs against the backdrop of rising global tensions, particularly the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
Tariffs and Trade with Canada
While addressing reporters, President Trump stated that a bilateral trade agreement between the U.S. and Canada remains within reach. However, he emphasized he would not retreat from his belief in the effectiveness of tariffs, particularly in securing favorable terms for the U.S. economy.
Prime Minister Carney, in his welcome remarks, said the world was watching the G7 for leadership and described the summit as occurring at a “turning point in history.”
Security and Diplomacy on the Agenda
Security is expected to be a major topic during the summit, especially as missile exchanges continue between Israel and Iran. Closed-door sessions between G7 leaders are reportedly focused on the global response to escalating military conflicts and broader geopolitical stability.
On a lighter note, leaders were seen exchanging small talk during the official photo session, with President Trump commenting on unexpectedly clear weather after forecasts of rain during a prior military parade in Washington. Prime Minister Carney joked with the German delegation and described his meeting with President Trump as “fantastic.”
The G7 summit continues through the weekend with further bilateral and multilateral meetings scheduled.
