May 12, 2025 – WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump is traveling to Saudi Arabia on Monday, marking the first international trip of his second term. The visit mirrors his 2017 decision to choose Saudi Arabia as his first foreign destination, breaking from the traditional presidential practice of visiting the United Kingdom first.
Saudi Arabia is the initial stop in a four-day Middle East tour, which will also include Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Focus on Diplomacy, Investment, and Regional Stability
The White House says the trip is aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties across the Gulf region. According to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump will emphasize “cooperative relationships” and regional stability, revisiting the goals of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states during his first term.
Though he visited Israel on his previous trip, Trump is not expected to visit the country this time, as the U.S. continues indirect engagement in ongoing conflicts including the Israel-Hamas war and diplomatic efforts regarding Ukraine.
U.S.-Saudi Business Ties Highlighted
Trump has linked the visit to potential Saudi investment in American businesses. In March, he referenced a prior $450 million pledge and said he expected new commitments, following a $600 billion investment promise reportedly made by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in January.
Trump recently spoke at a Saudi-backed investment forum in Miami and is expected to further discuss commercial partnerships during this trip.
Top Officials Join the President
Trump is accompanied by key cabinet members:
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio, joining stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, participating in broader security discussions
- A planned visit with U.S. troops stationed at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar
Qatar Royal Family Donates Jet for Trump Library
In an unexpected development, sources told CBS News that Qatar’s royal family is donating a jumbo jet for exclusive use by President Trump during his term. The aircraft is expected to be handed over to the future Trump presidential library at the end of his presidency.
