Post Falls, Idaho — Prosecutors have announced they will seek the death penalty against Jason Rook, the man accused of fatally shooting 46-year-old Nathan Rogers in February 2025.
Rook, 47, faces charges of first-degree murder, burglary, first-degree stalking, and destruction of evidence. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
According to court filings, Kootenai County prosecutors argue the killing was “especially heinous, atrocious or cruel” and claim Rook poses a continuing threat to society. These aggravating factors were listed in a formal notice of intent to pursue capital punishment, filed on May 30.
Defense attorneys have filed motions challenging the state’s case, seeking to remove the listed aggravating factors. They also argue that Idaho’s death penalty laws are outdated and represent cruel and unusual punishment under modern legal standards.
The incident occurred on February 26, when police responded to a report from a woman who said an intruder had entered her home and believed her boyfriend, Nathan Rogers, had been shot. Officers arrived to find Rogers dead from gunshot wounds.
Ring doorbell footage reportedly captured the incident, helping to identify Rook as the suspect.
Rook’s trial is scheduled to begin on September 22.
