Shoshone County Sheriff Resigns
Sheriff William Eddy of Shoshone County has announced his resignation, effective Saturday, after serving the community for over three months. Eddy cited health reasons as the primary factor for his decision to step down from his role as sheriff.
Reasons for Resignation
In a letter addressed to the county commissioners, Eddy explained that his decision was made after consulting with his doctor, who raised concerns about the stress associated with his position and its impact on his health. Eddy emphasized the importance of prioritizing his well-being and spending more time with his family, including his children and grandchildren.
Challenges During Tenure
During his brief tenure, Eddy faced several significant challenges. The county experienced a state of emergency due to severe flooding in the Coeur d’Alene and St. Joe river areas. This was followed by a major windstorm that caused widespread power outages in North Idaho and Eastern Washington.
Additionally, a tragic incident occurred when a 77-year-old man opened fire inside the sheriff’s office in Wallace, injuring two women before being fatally shot by law enforcement. This event marked a particularly difficult time for the department under Eddy’s leadership.
Background and Previous Leadership
Eddy’s resignation follows the departure of former Sheriff Holly Lindsey, who resigned after being involved in an off-duty hit-and-run incident. Lindsey is currently facing a misdemeanor charge of inattentive driving, with a court hearing scheduled for next week.
Prior to Eddy’s appointment, the role of sheriff was temporarily filled by then-Undersheriff Lance Stutzke. Stutzke resigned the day Eddy was appointed, citing interference from individuals with personal and political agendas as a reason for his departure.
Community and Leadership Reactions
Despite the challenges faced during his time in office, Eddy expressed gratitude for the support he received from county leadership and the community. He described his role as sheriff as one of the greatest honors of his professional life.
However, Eddy’s leadership was not without controversy. Police chiefs from Pinehurst, Kellogg, and Osburn issued a letter of no confidence in Eddy, raising concerns about his leadership and communication. Eddy stated that his decision to resign was unrelated to this letter.
