Extradition and Charges
A Bangladeshi citizen has been extradited to the United States from Malaysia to face charges related to a significant online child exploitation operation. The individual, Zobaidul Amin, is accused of orchestrating a widespread sextortion scheme targeting minors. Allegedly, Amin posed as a teenager on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat to coerce minors, some as young as 11, into creating explicit content.
Alleged Methods and Victims
Authorities claim that Amin threatened to distribute the explicit images and videos to the victims’ acquaintances unless they provided more material. The operation reportedly impacted numerous victims, with a significant number located in Alaska and others spread across the United States and internationally.
Details of the Scheme
Prosecutors allege that Amin demanded daily quotas of explicit content from his victims. Despite having his accounts deleted, he allegedly continued to threaten victims over extended periods. It is also claimed that Amin collaborated with others to store and disseminate the illicit material online, utilizing numerous fake accounts to bypass social media bans.
Legal Proceedings
Amin appeared in federal court in Alaska shortly after his arrival in the U.S. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include conspiracy to produce and distribute child pornography, child exploitation enterprise, production of child pornography, cyberstalking, aggravated identity theft, and wire fraud.
Use of Social Media
Court documents reveal that Amin allegedly managed over 80 Snapchat accounts and 40 Instagram accounts to evade detection. He and his associates are accused of organizing the explicit content in digital folders and sharing links to these folders to extort further material from victims.
Background and International Coordination
Before facing charges in the U.S., Amin was residing in Malaysia, where he was attending medical school. In September 2022, Malaysian authorities charged him with multiple counts related to child pornography. The extradition and subsequent legal actions were the result of coordinated efforts between the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, and Malaysian authorities.
FBI’s Broader Operations
The FBI has been actively pursuing individuals involved in child exploitation and other criminal activities. According to statements from the agency, they have recently undertaken operations that include dismantling criminal gangs and addressing significant fraud cases. The arrest of Amin is part of these broader efforts to combat international crime.
