Incident in Fremont County
Idaho Fish and Game officials say a hiker was injured Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 30, after a bear encounter near Squirrel Creek in Fremont County.
The adult male was hiking alone along the south rim when a bear charged from thick timber at close range. The bear bit him while passing and then continued into the forest. Despite his injuries, the man managed to hike out on his own and seek medical treatment.
Response From Fish and Game
Staff have posted signs warning visitors of bear activity in the area. Officials believe the bear’s actions were defensive, triggered by the sudden, close encounter. Based on the circumstances, no further management actions are planned.
Safety Precautions in Bear Country
Idaho Fish and Game reminds backcountry visitors to take precautions when traveling in bear habitat:
- Hike in groups of three or more people and avoid hiking during dawn, dusk, or after dark.
- Stay alert by looking for signs such as tracks, scat, or overturned logs.
- Make noise in dense vegetation, near streams, or on windy days to alert bears of your presence.
- Avoid thick brush and areas with food sources like berry patches or animal carcasses.
- Carry bear spray and know how to use it.
Regional Notice
The Upper Snake Region continues to monitor bear activity. Visitors are urged to stay cautious and prepared when recreating in Idaho’s backcountry.
