BRUNEAU, Idaho — A man was shot and killed by a deputy early Sunday morning in Bruneau following a confrontation involving a firearm, according to law enforcement officials.
The Owyhee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an intoxicated and unwanted individual at a residence on Hyde Avenue just after 2:00 a.m. Upon arrival, a deputy encountered the man, who allegedly brandished a rifle and refused multiple commands to drop the weapon. Shots were fired during the incident, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased. The deputy involved, whose identity also remains undisclosed, was not injured. In line with standard procedures, the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is under review.
The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the Critical Incident Task Force investigation. A spokesperson confirmed that no additional details, including whether the suspect fired his weapon, will be released during the early phase of the inquiry.
This marks the first officer-involved shooting in Owyhee County since 2022, when deputies fatally shot a man who charged at them with a knife in Murphy.
The investigation is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
