OEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — A skilled pilot averted a potential disaster Wednesday after the engine of a small aircraft failed mid-flight over the mountainous terrain east of Coeur d’Alene Airport.
According to Coeur d’Alene Aviation, the incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet. The pilot, who had recently purchased the aircraft in the Midwest, was en route home when the engine suddenly lost power.
Emergency Glide to Safety
Demonstrating calm under pressure, the pilot was able to glide the plane toward Lake Coeur d’Alene, executing a controlled emergency landing near the shoreline.
Kirk Lauer, director of operations at Coeur d’Alene Aviation, confirmed that a faulty fuel pump was responsible for the engine failure. He credited the pilot’s quick decision-making and strong flying skills for the safe outcome.
“This could have been a very dangerous situation,” Lauer said. “But thanks to the pilot’s experience and training, it ended well.”
A Positive Message for Aviation
Lauer emphasized that the event should serve as a reminder of the safety and professionalism found in general aviation.
“We hope this story highlights the level of preparedness and safety in aviation, rather than fueling unnecessary fear,” he added.
No injuries were reported, and the aircraft sustained minimal damage during the landing.
