FBI Links California Fertility Clinic Bombing to Anti-Natalist Extremism

Authorities Say Suspect Targeted Fertility Clinic Over Anti-Natalist Ideology

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — May 18 — Federal officials say a fatal car bombing outside a California fertility clinic on Saturday appears to have been motivated by anti-natalist ideology, a belief system opposed to human reproduction. One person was killed and four others were injured in the explosion, which authorities have classified as an act of terrorism.

The suspect, identified as Guy Edward Bartkus, 25, of Twentynine Palms, is believed to have died in the explosion he detonated in the parking lot of American Reproductive Centers in Palm Springs.

Online Activity Under Review in Ongoing Federal Probe

Investigators are analyzing a range of digital content linked to Bartkus, including a 30-minute audio message and various social media posts that appear to promote anti-natalist views. Officials also believe Bartkus may be the author of a recent forum post discussing suicide via an explosive device, and are examining a YouTube channel associated with the same alias, which features videos of homemade explosive experiments.

At a press briefing on Sunday, officials said they were reviewing a possible manifesto and suspect the attack may have been intended for livestream.

Suspect’s Background and Investigation Developments

Law enforcement sources report that Bartkus was struggling with depression and relationship issues. A search warrant was executed at his residence in Twentynine Palms shortly after the bombing.

Although authorities initially delayed identifying the suspect due to the condition of his remains, the FBI later confirmed Bartkus’ identity. Officials are continuing to interview relatives, friends, and associates to trace his movements and motivations.

The FBI, along with the Palm Springs Police Department, has requested public assistance in gathering information about Bartkus, including any sightings of a 2010 silver Ford Fusion he was believed to be driving.

Blast Damage and Casualty Details

The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. at 1199 North Indian Canyon Drive, damaging buildings and businesses within a 250-yard radius. Witnesses reported hearing and feeling the blast from miles away.

All four individuals injured in the attack were released from the hospital by Sunday, though the extent of their injuries has not been made public.

The American Reproductive Centers confirmed on social media that a vehicle detonated near its facility but did not provide further comment.

Officials Assert No Ongoing Threat to the Public

FBI Assistant Director Akil Davis described the investigation as one of the most complex handled by the agency’s Southern California office. Forensic teams remain on-site collecting physical evidence and reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said the bombing appeared to be an isolated incident and reassured residents there is no continuing danger.

“I am absolutely confident that this city is safe,” Mills said.
