Why It Matters
A federal judge in Manhattan sentenced Alon, Tal and Oren Alexander to 30 years in prison each on Tuesday after their convictions on sex trafficking and related charges.
What Happened
The brothers were convicted earlier this year following a five-week trial. The case included convictions for sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and inducing travel for unlawful sexual activity.
Alon and Tal Alexander were also convicted of sex trafficking a minor and additional sex abuse counts. Oren Alexander was convicted of sexual exploitation of a minor.
Tal Alexander, 40, and Oren Alexander, 39, worked as luxury real estate brokers. Alon Alexander, Oren’s twin, was an executive at the family security company.
By the Numbers
- 30 years: Prison term imposed on each brother.
- 12 women: Women who delivered statements during sentencing.
- 11 women: Trial witnesses who testified about assaults involving one or more brothers.
- More than 70: Women who reported accounts to investigators.
- 15 years: Sentence requested by defense attorneys, while federal prosecutors sought life imprisonment.
Testimony and Sentencing
Isa Brooks testified that she was 16 when two of the brothers and their friends raped her. She said she has experienced flashbacks for more than a decade.
Maya Miller testified that Tal Alexander raped her in August 2014 after inviting her to a mansion in the Hamptons. Ava Wells, testifying under a pseudonym, said Alon Alexander raped her in Tel Aviv in March 2016.
The brothers denied drugging or raping anyone. During sentencing, Judge Valerie Caproni compared them to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Katie Moore, one of the women who addressed the court, said, “These men spent years treating woman and girls as though our lives, body, voices, humanity meant nothing.”
Caproni said the testimony presented two possible conclusions: either the women were exceptionally convincing performers, or they were telling the truth about being raped and drugged.
