Five Soldiers Wounded in Fort Stewart Shooting; Suspect in Custody
Fort Stewart, Georgia — Five soldiers were wounded Wednesday in a shooting on the Fort Stewart military base, according to U.S. Army officials. The shooter has been apprehended, and the base is no longer under threat.
The incident occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, prompting an immediate lockdown at 11:04 a.m. All five injured soldiers were treated on-site before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for additional care, the base said in a statement.
Base Lockdown and Community Response
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and home to the 3rd Infantry Division. Nearly 9,000 service members and family members live on the base, with more than 18,000 military retirees residing within a 50-mile radius.
During the lockdown, all gates were temporarily closed, and three nearby schools also implemented safety measures. The lockdown was lifted shortly after the suspect was taken into custody, and no further threat to the community remains.
Officials Monitor Situation
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and that the administration is monitoring developments.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their families, asking residents across the state to keep them in their prayers. Senator Raphael Warnock also released a statement calling the incident “heartbreaking” and voicing support for the soldiers and their families.
The U.S. Army and local authorities continue to investigate the shooting.
