A gunman killed four people and wounded another in a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper housing the NFL’s headquarters before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities identified the attacker as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, who left a note blaming chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) for his mental illness and asking for his brain to be studied.
Tamura drove cross-country, entered 345 Park Avenue with an assault-style rifle, and opened fire in the lobby before moving to the 33rd floor. He mistakenly targeted offices of building owner Rudin Management rather than the NFL. Victims included New York police officer Didarul Islam, a Blackstone employee, and two other civilians. An NFL staff member was seriously injured.
The shooting prompted a massive lockdown in Midtown, with police clearing the building floor by floor. Officials praised Islam as a hero who died protecting others. The investigation is ongoing.
