What Happened
The U.S. Economic Development Administration announced Monday that the Intermountain-West Energy Corridor Tech Hub, led by the nonprofit Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium, will receive approximately $31 million in federal funding. The award makes the Idaho-Wyoming initiative the only federally designated tech hub exclusively focused on nuclear energy development.
The Tech Hub designation comes under the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, which established 31 regional innovation hubs nationwide to strengthen American competitiveness in critical sectors. The Idaho-Wyoming coalition is one of six tech hubs receiving awards this week, totaling $169 million across the group.
Matching contributions from private and state partners will bring the total investment in the Idaho-Wyoming initiative to more than $40 million. The effort comprises more than 45 member organizations, including Idaho National Laboratory, Idaho Power, Deloitte, city governments, universities, and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Christi Gilchrist, executive director of the Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium, described the award as validation of regional strength: “The Tech Hub designation and funding award reflects the strength of our entire IAEC membership.”
U.S. Senator Jim Risch issued a statement supporting the investment, noting that “the future of American nuclear energy is being developed in Idaho.” Senators Mike Crapo and Rep. Mike Simpson also backed the award. The entire Idaho congressional delegation had opposed the 2022 CHIPS legislation that created the tech hub framework, yet the state has now benefited directly from the program’s implementation.
