Moscow Responds to Trump’s Remarks
The Kremlin pushed back Wednesday against President Donald Trump’s criticism of Russia’s stalled war effort in Ukraine. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia should be seen as a bear, not a “paper tiger,” rejecting the U.S. president’s suggestion that Moscow was weakened.
“Russia is by no means a tiger. Russia is traditionally seen as a bear. There is no such thing as paper bears,” Peskov said during a radio interview.
His comments followed Trump’s statement that Russia is facing major economic troubles and that Ukraine has a chance to reclaim its territory.
Trump Signals Strong Support for Ukraine
Trump’s remarks marked a clear show of support for Kyiv, signaling that U.S. backing remains firm despite months of speculation about Washington’s approach. The president said Ukraine should act decisively while Russia struggles under sanctions and battlefield setbacks.
Observers noted that the comments contrasted with earlier periods when Trump avoided strong language against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia Cites Economic “Resilience”
Peskov dismissed Trump’s claims of financial instability, insisting that Russia maintains “macroeconomic stability” despite ongoing Western sanctions. He acknowledged tensions but argued that Moscow has adapted and remains capable of sustaining its war effort.
Background on the War
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but has failed to secure quick victories. Ukrainian forces, heavily backed by Western support, have retaken territory in key regions. Trump’s recent remarks suggested confidence that Ukraine could continue making gains.
