Why It Matters
A brutal triple homicide in Jackson, Mississippi has left two sisters and a 2-year-old boy dead from gunshot wounds, pushing the city’s homicide total to 41 for the year. The killing of a toddler has drawn particular outrage from family members and law enforcement alike, as authorities scramble to identify and locate the suspect or suspects responsible.
What Happened
Jackson police launched a manhunt after a 911 call Saturday reporting an aggravated assault led officers to a residential neighborhood located less than 10 miles northwest of downtown Jackson. When they arrived, they found three people dead: Keyana Weathersby, 25; her son Camari Givens, 2; and her sister Erica Weathersby, 30. All three had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
A red 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage belonging to one of the victims was taken from the scene during the crime. Officers located the abandoned vehicle the following night in North Jackson. As of Monday afternoon, the identity of the suspect or suspects remained unknown, and police were actively seeking public assistance with leads.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney did not mince words in describing the perpetrator. “This is a heinous crime,” Brackney said, calling whoever is responsible “an absolute coward” and “the vilest of human beings.”
The victims’ family is also speaking out. Demarco Bailey, who identified the women as his sisters, expressed grief and anger over the loss of his young nephew. “I just need justice. Not only for my sisters, but my nephew. He’s only 2 1/2 years old. Come on now — a 2-year-old child?” Bailey said.

Zoom Out
Jackson’s homicide rate has remained a persistent public safety challenge for Mississippi’s capital city. The fact that more than 90 percent of the year’s killings have involved firearms underscores the broader gun violence crisis afflicting many mid-size Southern cities. The weekend killings mark one of the more jarring incidents in recent memory given the age of one of the victims — violent crime claiming the life of a toddler draws attention well beyond city limits and puts pressure on local law enforcement to deliver results quickly.
Violent crime trends are being closely watched across the country. Other states in the region have dealt with similar spikes in shooting-related deaths, placing strain on police departments and coroners’ offices alike. Jackson’s homicide pace in 2026 reflects a stubborn challenge for city leaders working to improve public safety outcomes.

What’s Next
Jackson police are continuing their investigation and urging anyone with information about the identities or whereabouts of those responsible to come forward. The stolen vehicle’s recovery in North Jackson may provide investigators with additional forensic leads. Authorities have not announced any arrests or named any persons of interest as of Monday.
The city’s coroner office is processing the cases, and investigators will likely press for surveillance footage, witness accounts, and any other available evidence from the scene and surrounding area. With 41 homicides already logged by the end of June, Jackson officials face growing urgency to stem the violence before the second half of the year.
