Why It Matters
Federal safety investigators are examining whether Frontier Airlines followed proper evacuation procedures after a deadly runway collision at Denver International Airport left 12 passengers with minor injuries and raised questions about emergency response protocols.
What Happened
A Frontier Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles struck and killed a pedestrian during takeoff at Denver International Airport on Friday night at approximately 11:19 p.m. The pilot reported an engine fire and smoke in the cabin, aborting takeoff and evacuating 224 passengers and seven crew members on the runway.
Passengers exited the aircraft via emergency slides. An airport spokesperson confirmed 12 passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, with five requiring hospital transport.
The National Transportation Safety Board said Sunday it is gathering information to determine whether the evacuation meets criteria for a full safety investigation. NTSB spokesperson Sarah Taylor Sulick indicated the agency would provide additional details within hours.
By The Numbers
- 224 passengers and 7 crew members were aboard the flight
- 12 passengers received minor injuries during evacuation
- 5 passengers were transported to hospitals
- The incident occurred at 11:19 p.m. on Friday
- The pedestrian crossed the runway approximately 2 minutes after jumping a security fence
What Passengers Reported
Several passengers expressed concern about the evacuation process, including being trapped inside the aircraft for several minutes as smoke filled the cabin. Video footage showed some passengers evacuating with carry-on luggage, a violation of standard emergency procedures.
Passenger Mohamed Hassan described the scene as chaotic. He said many passengers were screaming and crying as smoke filled the cabin after hearing a loud boom during takeoff.
Once outside the aircraft, passengers reported being left on the tarmac in cold conditions before emergency crews bused them to the terminal.
The Runway Intrusion
Denver Airport CEO Phil Washington described the incident as a preventable tragedy caused by one person who trespassed at the airport. Authorities said the individual jumped a security fence and crossed the runway within two minutes before being struck by the aircraft.
The Denver Police Department confirmed the investigation is ongoing. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. Airport officials said they do not believe the person was an airport employee.
According to air traffic control recordings, the pilot informed the control tower they had struck someone on the runway and reported an engine fire. The pilot stated there was smoke in the aircraft and requested immediate evacuation on the runway.
What’s Next
The NTSB will determine whether to open a formal safety investigation into the evacuation procedures. The agency is expected to examine why passengers remained inside the smoke-filled cabin and whether proper emergency protocols were followed.
Denver police continue investigating the runway intrusion and how the individual breached airport security. Airport officials have pledged to answer outstanding questions once the multi-agency investigation progresses.
Frontier Airlines said it is investigating the incident in coordination with the airport and safety authorities. The airline has not responded to requests for information about specific evacuation procedures used during the emergency.
