The White House has also imposed stricter rules requiring military contractors to source critical minerals domestically rather than from China, tightening pressure on defense suppliers to develop alternative sources.
Samarium—a rare earth element used in permanent magnets for missile guidance systems and interceptors—exemplifies the supply challenge. The U.S. defense sector needs between 50 and 100 tons annually.
