What Happened
A single-engine Piper PA-28 Cherokee aircraft carrying a pilot and flight student reported engine trouble to air traffic control at approximately 11 a.m. Monday as it approached Pensacola International Airport. The flight had been airborne for roughly 30 minutes after departing from the same airport.
The pilot reported that oil pressure was dropping into the red zone and that fumes from leaking oil were filling the cockpit. Recognizing the severity of the situation and unable to reach the airport safely, the pilot directed the aircraft toward Interstate 10, where open lanes provided a clear landing surface.
The aircraft glided under a highway sign, clearing it by mere feet, before touching down on the interstate in a section without traffic. The pilot and flight student walked away uninjured. No vehicles on the highway were struck or damaged.
A Close Call on the Highway
Truck driver Eric Jordan was traveling in the eastbound lanes when the Piper descended directly in front of his vehicle. “It’s a miracle,” Jordan told local news. “If I wouldn’t have seen that shadow over my truck and slowed down, (the plane) would have been in the side of the cab.”, as first reported by the Local News 8
The fortuitous timing—the plane landing in empty lanes rather than occupied traffic—and Jordan’s attentiveness likely prevented a catastrophic collision. Drivers nearby reported seeing the aircraft descend but were not in the direct path of the landing.
