Republicans Begin Work on Major Legislative Package Backing Trump’s Agenda

WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republicans have started drafting a large policy bill aligned with President Donald Trump’s domestic priorities, but early disagreements have surfaced over how to fund the plan.

The bill aims to extend the 2017 tax cuts, increase military and immigration enforcement funding, and raise the debt ceiling. Committees are working to finalize their sections of the legislation, with a goal of bringing the full package to a vote by Memorial Day.

Some proposals have already sparked debate. A $20 fee on all passenger vehicles was pulled after pushback from conservatives. A proposal to allow wealthy foreigners to buy legal residency — the so-called “gold card” visa — was also dropped due to opposition from within the GOP.

An overhaul of the student loan system, which would shift some financial responsibility to schools, moved forward despite partisan disagreement. Another key issue still being debated is whether to reduce Medicaid spending. Some Republicans favor introducing work requirements, while others warn of the potential political risks.

The House’s narrow Republican majority means leaders must carefully navigate internal differences to reach agreement. Talks on topics like state tax deductions and federal spending targets are ongoing.

House leaders say the work is challenging, but necessary to support the president’s policy goals.
