Johns Hopkins will use its Defense Department funding to establish a “multi-material recycling innovation hub.” South Dakota School of Mines is funding a workforce development consortium that includes the University of Kentucky and Missouri S&T University.
The announcement also included $2 billion in new mining contracts and projects. Two private companies received substantial federal backing: Niron Magnetics, a Minnesota-based firm, secured $150 million for rare-earth-free magnet development, while California’s Sila Nanotechnologies received $1.4 billion to manufacture silicon-carbon battery anodes and lithium-ion battery cells.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick attended the ceremony, signaling the administration’s priority on domestic mining capability.
