DHS Requests Navy Base Assistance for Chicago Immigration Operations
Federal officials have requested logistical assistance from a military base outside Chicago as part of ongoing immigration-related initiatives. The move suggests the Trump administration may be preparing expanded federal operations in the area.
Naval Station Great Lakes, located roughly 35 miles north of Chicago, confirmed receiving a request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for “limited support in the form of facilities, infrastructure, and other logistical needs.” A base spokesperson said no final decision has been made and no official order has been received.
This development follows recent deployments of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, aimed at addressing crime, homelessness, and immigration concerns.
No Deployment Yet, But Tensions Mount
As of Thursday, the Illinois National Guard reported no formal request for mobilization in Chicago. State authorities, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have publicly opposed any federal deployment.
The leaders argue that such action is unwarranted, citing a decline in crime and voicing concern that the presence of military personnel could disrupt community relations. The state is considering legal action to block federal enforcement efforts on Illinois soil.
Federal-State Clash Over Public Safety Approach
President Trump has frequently criticized Chicago’s crime rates and immigration policies, describing the city as a “hellhole” and objecting to its sanctuary city status. In contrast, state and city officials maintain that violent crime has dropped and dispute the need for military involvement.
In 2024, Chicago recorded a homicide rate of 21.7 per 100,000 residents, according to federal data. While this was lower than rates in several other major cities, Chicago reported more total homicides—573—than any other U.S. city. However, city data shows a 22% decline in violent crime during the first half of 2025, marking the most significant decrease in over a decade.
Legal, Logistical, and Political Implications
The Illinois Army and Air National Guard consist of approximately 13,000 members, many based at armories throughout the state. These facilities are under state control and are not automatically accessible for federal use without the governor’s authorization.
If the federal government proceeds without state cooperation, it would need to find alternate resources for operations in the region. The recent inquiry into Naval Station Great Lakes may be part of that strategy.
Former President Barack Obama, a Chicago native, weighed in via social media, cautioning that increased military use on domestic soil could pose risks to civil liberties.
Outlook Uncertain Amid Continued Disputes
As discussions between federal and state authorities continue, the scope of any future immigration enforcement efforts in Chicago remains unclear. The administration has not released details about potential timelines or operational plans, and local officials are closely monitoring developments.
