President Trump Addresses the 80th UN General Assembly
President Donald Trump delivered a wide-ranging speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York City on September 23. The address, given without a functioning teleprompter, underscored his skepticism toward the UN’s role in global affairs and his criticism of current international policies.
Trump spoke on issues including immigration, climate change, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and his view that the UN has failed to act decisively in resolving global crises.
Strong Focus on Migration
The president devoted significant time to warning against unchecked migration, especially in Europe. He argued that weak border controls are eroding cultural identity and threatening national stability.
“Once we started detaining and deporting everyone who crossed the border — and removing illegal aliens from the United States — they simply stopped coming,” Trump said, urging other nations to adopt a similar approach.
He cautioned that policies driven by “political correctness” would undermine Western nations if leaders refused to enforce strict immigration rules.
Climate Change Called a “Con Job”
On environmental issues, Trump rejected global climate initiatives, describing them as harmful to U.S. industry and beneficial to competitors.
He said green energy mandates shift manufacturing from developed nations to countries with weaker environmental restrictions, enabling those nations to profit while American industry suffers.
Calling climate change “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” Trump dismissed decades of warnings about rising global risks.
Limited Attention to Ukraine and Gaza
Trump addressed the wars in Ukraine and Gaza briefly, offering no new proposals. He criticized European nations for continuing to purchase Russian energy despite the conflict, calling it “embarrassing” and counterproductive.
He also opposed efforts at the UN to advance a two-state solution in the Middle East, which he said rewarded Hamas. While reaffirming his desire to end both conflicts, he acknowledged progress has been more difficult than anticipated.
Criticism of the United Nations
Malfunctioning equipment at the UN building — including a stalled escalator and a broken teleprompter — became a theme in Trump’s broader argument that the UN has lost its effectiveness.
“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” he asked, accusing the institution of producing “empty words” instead of meaningful action.
He noted that despite his past efforts to broker peace deals, the UN provided little support or recognition.
Off-Script Remarks
Without a working teleprompter, Trump moved through topics that included U.S. crime reduction, global pollution, and his long-standing opposition to wind energy. He also joked about world leaders backstage, drawing scattered laughter from the audience.
Although the speech exceeded the UN’s 15-minute guideline, delegates remained mostly quiet throughout, a notable contrast to the open laughter he encountered during his first term.
