Trump Pushes Back Against Epstein Case Demands
President Donald Trump dismissed growing calls from his own supporters to release more information about Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, calling the controversy a “hoax” and criticizing his base for falling for what he described as a left-wing smear.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social Wednesday, Trump accused his supporters of being duped by opponents seeking to damage him politically, calling those who question his handling of the case “gullible weaklings.”
“Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bullshit,’ hook, line, and sinker,” he wrote. “Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats’ work. I don’t want their support anymore!”
Tensions Within Trump’s Base Over Epstein
The president’s comments reflect mounting pressure from some within his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, who suspect the administration is shielding wealthy and influential figures — possibly including Trump — by withholding Epstein-related documents.
Many of Trump’s allies have repeatedly urged him to declassify files on Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019. Conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death and his alleged client list continue to circulate widely, including among Trump’s most ardent supporters.
On Tuesday, Trump appeared more measured, calling the inquiry “boring” but expressing support for releasing any “credible” information. When asked why his supporters are so interested, he told reporters:
“It’s sordid, but it’s boring, and I don’t understand why it keeps going. Anything that is credible, I would say, let them have it.”
Calls for Transparency Grow
Prominent conservatives, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and even Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, have all called for more transparency in the case.
Johnson, speaking to a right-wing podcast on Tuesday, broke with Trump, saying:
“It’s a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide.”
Earlier, Bondi had said she had Epstein’s client list “sitting on my desk,” which further fueled public interest.
Background on the Inquiry
Last week, the Justice Department and FBI stated that a review of the Epstein files found no evidence of foul play in his death and no public client list to release. Despite this, many within Trump’s movement continue to demand the documents.
During past campaigns, Trump himself encouraged skepticism of powerful elites and government institutions, rhetoric that has contributed to the current backlash.
