USA/ DC — President Donald Trump signaled Thursday that the escalating U.S.-China tariff battle may be easing, suggesting he may not push tariffs higher to avoid stifling consumer demand.
“I may want to go to less,” Trump told reporters, noting concerns that excessive tariffs could discourage spending. His remarks come after the U.S. imposed 10% tariffs on most imports and raised Chinese tariffs to 145% following Beijing’s retaliation.
China has since indicated it will not engage in further tariff hikes. Trump confirmed that talks are ongoing and expressed optimism about reaching a deal, though details remain sparse.
Meanwhile, Trump said a proposed spin-off of TikTok’s U.S. operations would be postponed until trade negotiations with China are resolved. ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, faces a U.S. deadline to divest the app’s American assets, used by 170 million Americans.
