A Final Warning from Washington
President Donald Trump has set a deadline for Hamas to accept a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal with Israel, saying the group must agree by Sunday evening or face intensified military action.
In a message on Truth Social, Trump called it a “last chance” for Hamas, warning that if the proposal is rejected, military operations would escalate “like no one has ever seen before.”
Details of the U.S. Proposal
The White House introduced a 20-point framework earlier this week during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington. The plan includes:
- An immediate halt to fighting in Gaza.
- Expanded humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians.
- Release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas.
- Israeli withdrawal from Gaza under a phased timetable.
Israel has already accepted the plan. Hamas officials have responded cautiously, saying they want clarifications on the schedule for Israeli troop withdrawal and rejecting what they describe as a “take it or leave it” approach.
Conditions on the Ground
Ahead of the ceasefire discussions, Israel instructed residents of Gaza City to move south, warning that those who stayed risked being treated as militants or supporters.
The United Nations has reported strikes in areas where displaced families have gathered, including Deir al Balah and Khan Younis, both of which now host hundreds of thousands of people in temporary shelters. The U.N. described the U.S. peace plan as a “window of opportunity” to restore aid access and secure the release of hostages.
White House and International Response
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced Trump’s message, telling reporters that Hamas has the opportunity to accept the deal and move toward peace. “If they don’t,” she said, “the consequences are going to be very tragic.”
International voices, including the United Nations and humanitarian groups, have urged both sides to seize the opportunity for a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties.
What’s Next
Hamas has until Sunday evening to formally respond. If the plan is rejected, Trump has signaled that the U.S. will support further Israeli operations against Hamas in Gaza.
