Grizzly Killed After Close-Range Encounter in Fremont County
A big game hunter in eastern Idaho shot and killed a grizzly bear in self-defense Saturday morning after the bear reportedly charged from close range. The incident occurred in the North Antelope Flats area of Island Park within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.
According to a statement from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the hunter was moving through dense timber when the adult male grizzly emerged suddenly from nearby brush and charged directly toward him. The man fired his hunting rifle before the bear made contact, resulting in a fatal shot.
Authorities Confirm Self-Defense Claim
The hunter immediately reported the encounter to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, which in turn notified Idaho Fish and Game. After investigating the scene, wildlife officers concluded that the shooting was justified under self-defense.
“After conducting a thorough investigation, it was determined that the hunter acted in self-defense as he was being charged by a bear from a close distance,” officials said in a statement.
Grizzlies Still Protected Under Law
Grizzly bears are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act and state wildlife regulations. However, state law allows individuals to defend themselves in cases where life is clearly in danger.
Fish and Game reminded the public that grizzlies are active across parts of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and have occasionally been spotted as far south as the Salmon and Grangeville regions.
Safety Guidelines for Hunting in Grizzly Country
Wildlife officials continue to urge hunters to take precautions in areas where grizzly bears may be present. Key safety tips include:
- Carry bear spray and keep it easily accessible
- Avoid hunting alone—communicate plans with partners
- Watch for signs of bear activity such as tracks or scat
- Retrieve harvested game quickly
- Store meat, food, and trash at least 200 yards from camp and 10 feet off the ground
- Make noise when moving through thick vegetation or along streams to avoid surprise encounters
