WASHINGTON — President Trump Raises Tariff Option Over Greenland
President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States may impose tariffs on other countries if they oppose U.S. efforts related to Greenland. He cited national security considerations as the primary reason for the potential action.
The comments were made during a White House event focused on health care. Trump stated that Greenland is strategically important to U.S. security interests.
National Security Cited as Key Justification
“We need Greenland for national security,” Trump said, adding that tariffs could be used if countries do not cooperate on the issue.
The administration has repeatedly emphasized Greenland’s strategic value, pointing to its location in the Arctic and growing global competition involving China and Russia. The United States already operates a military base on the island.
Administration Has Considered Multiple Approaches
Senior officials have previously confirmed that the administration has explored several options regarding Greenland. These have included diplomatic engagement and discussions about a potential purchase.
Greenland and Denmark have consistently stated that the territory is not for sale and has no intention of becoming part of the United States.
Tariffs Described as Broader Policy Tool
Trump compared the Greenland approach to his use of tariffs in other policy areas. He noted that similar pressure had been applied to encourage foreign governments to raise drug prices abroad as part of a “most favored nations” pricing strategy.
According to Trump, countries were warned they could face steep tariffs if they did not comply with those demands.
Meetings Highlight Ongoing Disagreement
Following meetings in Washington with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, representatives from Greenland and Denmark said they have a fundamental disagreement with the administration’s position.
The White House has not released additional details clarifying how tariffs might be implemented or which countries could be affected.
Tariff Authority Faces Supreme Court Review
Since returning to office, Trump has significantly expanded the use of tariffs, raising the overall average tariff rate to an estimated 17 percent.
Many of these measures were enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The legality of those actions has been challenged in multiple courts, with several rulings finding the use of the law unlawful.
The issue is now before the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected to issue a decision in the near future.
Trump Addresses Legal Stakes
Trump said Friday that a ruling against the administration could undermine his broader agenda.
“I hope we win the Supreme Court case,” he said, adding that an unfavorable decision would be damaging for the country.
