Why It Matters
Micron Technology is one of Idaho’s largest employers and a cornerstone of the state’s semiconductor industry. Any modification to its operating permit directly affects how the Boise-area facility manages air emissions, making public input an important part of the regulatory process.
What Happened
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has opened a 30-day public comment period on a draft Tier II operating permit for Micron Technology, Inc. The permit covers a modification and renewal of the facility’s emission cap and supersedes a prior permit issued in June 2025.
Micron manufactures semiconductors and conducts research and development on silicon-based wafers at its Idaho facility. The proposed permit modification was reviewed by DEQ, which determined it will not cause or significantly contribute to a violation of ambient air quality standards, and will not unreasonably harm human health, animal life, or vegetation.
The agency has proposed to formally issue the updated Tier II operating permit following the close of the comment window. Draft permit materials are available for public review at the DEQ State Office at 1410 N. Hilton St. in Boise. Questions can be directed to DEQ contact Zach Pierce at (208) 373-0502.

Zoom Out
Micron Technology remains one of the most significant private-sector players in Idaho’s economy. The company’s Boise operations have long anchored the state’s technology sector, and its ongoing expansion aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Data center investment across the region has also grown substantially in recent years, reinforcing Idaho’s position as an emerging hub for technology infrastructure in the Mountain West.
What’s Next
Members of the public have until July 26, 2026 to submit written comments on the draft permit. After the comment period closes, DEQ will review any submissions before issuing a final decision on the permit modification.
