Israel’s security cabinet has approved a new operational plan to expand its military operations in Gaza, including occupying more territory and relocating Palestinians to southern Gaza, according to a senior Israeli source.
The plan shifts from limited raids to permanent military presence in occupied areas. It also allows for some humanitarian aid to enter Gaza but aims to restrict Hamas from controlling aid distribution.
The policy aligns with an earlier proposal supported by President Trump to encourage the “voluntary departure” of Palestinians from Gaza, a concept widely condemned by international organizations and governments as unacceptable.
The move comes amid renewed conflict following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack, which killed around 1,200 people in Israel. The Gaza Health Ministry claims over 52,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli operations, though it does not differentiate between militants and civilians.
The goal of Israel’s expanded plan, officials say, is to defeat Hamas and recover the remaining hostages. Critics, including families of the hostages, say the government is prioritizing territory over the lives of those still held in Gaza.
