Ohio Mother Charged with Murder
A tragic discovery in Cleveland has led to the arrest of a mother on charges of aggravated murder. Authorities have charged 28-year-old Aliyah Henderson after the remains of her two daughters were found in suitcases buried in shallow graves.
Discovery of the Bodies
On Monday evening, a man walking his dog near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue stumbled upon a partially buried suitcase in a field close to Ginn Academy. Upon inspection, police found the body of a young girl inside the suitcase. A further search of the area led to the discovery of a second suitcase containing another body.
Victims Identified
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Mila Chatman, aged 8, and her half-sister Amor Wilson, aged 10. DNA testing was used to confirm their identities. The cause of death has not yet been released by the medical examiner.
Family’s Struggle
Mila’s father, DeShaun Chatman, expressed his grief and frustration over the situation. He mentioned his ongoing efforts to gain custody of Mila, which had been unsuccessful over the past five years. Chatman had not seen Mila since she was three years old and had been trying to locate her through child welfare services.
Chatman described Mila as a joyful child who loved the color pink and considered herself a princess. He lamented his inability to protect her, saying, “It’s very much horrible. I couldn’t save my baby.”
Community Impact
The discovery of the bodies has left the local community in shock. Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd described the incident as a “terrible, horrific situation” and acknowledged the trauma it has caused both to the officers involved and the community at large.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities detained Henderson on Wednesday evening. During a search of a residence, another child was found in good health and has since been placed under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Mila and Amor continues as the community grapples with the tragedy.
