President Trump Confirms Reciprocal Tariffs Will Apply Broadly to U.S. Trading Partners

WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced that his administration’s upcoming reciprocal tariffs plan will apply to all trading partners with tariffs on U.S. exports, not just a limited group. The new policy is expected to be formally introduced on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, President Trump stated, “You’d start with all countries.” When asked if there would be a specific cutoff for which nations would be affected, he responded, “There is not a cut off,” indicating a broad application of the measure.

The statement comes amid prior speculation that the new tariffs would focus only on 10 to 15 countries with significant trade imbalances or import duties targeting U.S. goods. When questioned about that narrower scope, Trump dismissed the claim, saying, “You didn’t hear it from me.”

Some administration officials had previously suggested a limited approach. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent referenced a group of countries labeled the “Dirty 15” during a recent media interview, and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett mentioned that 10 to 15 countries account for the majority of the U.S. trade deficit.

The lack of specific details ahead of the policy’s rollout has contributed to market volatility. On Monday morning, all three major U.S. stock indexes experienced noticeable declines, reflecting investor concerns over the potential economic impact of widespread tariff actions.

Further information on the reciprocal tariffs plan is expected when the full policy is revealed later this week.
