Starting Wednesday, U.S. travelers without a REAL ID-compliant license or passport may face longer security checks at airports but will not be barred from flying, according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
While the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will stop accepting non-compliant state IDs, Noem clarified that passengers will still be allowed to board flights after additional screening.
The REAL ID law, passed in 2005, was intended to standardize ID requirements based on recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. Full enforcement has been delayed multiple times and is now scheduled for May 2025.
