A shooting incident in northern Power County, Idaho left three people dead and two others injured on Friday afternoon, prompting a massive multi-agency law enforcement response near Pocatello. Authorities confirmed Friday evening that the suspect is dead and the community faces no further threat.
Why It Matters
For residents of Power County and the broader Pocatello area, Friday’s shooting represented one of the most significant violent incidents the region has seen in recent memory. Law enforcement agencies from across eastern Idaho mobilized quickly to contain the threat, protect the public, and secure the scene — a response that officials credited with preventing further loss of life.
The swift action by deputies and regional partners drew praise from Power County Sheriff Kasey Kendall, who expressed gratitude for the coordinated response that ensured no additional harm came to the surrounding community.
What Happened
At approximately 2:38 p.m. on Friday, April 3, dispatch received reports of three people shot on Tank Farm Road in northern Power County. Emergency responders arrived to find two individuals deceased and one person injured. The injured person was transported to Portneuf Medical Center by ambulance.
During the initial investigation, authorities located a suspect hiding near the Portneuf River. While officers were on scene, additional gunshots were heard, and a second injured individual was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds. That person was life-flighted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect. When the suspect brandished a firearm and presented a direct threat to deputies, law enforcement responded with deadly force. The suspect died on scene. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Law enforcement held a news conference at 10:30 p.m. Friday night to brief the public on the situation. The Idaho Falls Police Department was called in to lead the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The investigation into the original shooting will be led by Idaho State Police, the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.

Zoom Out
Friday’s shooting underscores the critical importance of inter-agency cooperation in rural Idaho communities, where a single law enforcement agency may not have the resources to manage a large-scale, evolving threat alone. Power County’s coordination with Bannock County, Bingham County, Pocatello, American Falls, Idaho State Police, and others demonstrated the kind of regional partnership that protects communities across the Mountain West.
The incident also places renewed attention on officer safety and the difficult decisions deputies face in the field. When negotiations with an armed suspect break down, officers are trained to respond decisively — a reality that law enforcement advocates argue must be supported by public officials and policymakers. Discussions at the federal level about resource allocation for law enforcement, including proposals outlined in President Trump’s 2026 budget, continue to shape how agencies at every level are funded and equipped.
The names of the deceased and injured victims have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
What’s Next
The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force, led by Idaho Falls Police, will conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting portion of the incident. Idaho State Police, the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation into the original shooting.
“Our thoughts are with the families of those lost today and those recovering in the hospital,” Sheriff Kasey Kendall said in a statement. “We are grateful for the quick response of our deputies and regional partners who worked to ensure no further harm came to our community.”
Law enforcement remained on site Friday night to continue processing the scene. Further details, including the identities of the victims and the circumstances that led to the initial shooting, are expected to be released as the investigation progresses. The public is encouraged to stay informed through local authorities as additional information becomes available.
