Immigration Sweep Begins in New Orleans
Federal immigration officials have launched a new enforcement operation in New Orleans, marking the latest move in President Donald Trump’s nationwide immigration crackdown. The effort, led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is aimed at detaining individuals living in the country illegally—especially those previously released from local jails under so-called “sanctuary” policies.
The campaign comes on the heels of similar operations conducted in other major U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
Focus on Sanctuary Cities and Released Offenders
According to federal authorities, the New Orleans operation is focused on individuals with criminal records who were not turned over to federal agents due to local policies that limit cooperation with immigration enforcement.
New Orleans had previously operated under a consent decree limiting its police department’s ability to assist federal immigration agencies. That agreement was ended last month by a federal judge. However, the city’s police chief reiterated that local officers would not participate in enforcing federal immigration law.
Despite the DHS focus on criminal offenders, critics argue that some arrests have swept up individuals with no criminal records. Several local residents have expressed concerns about profiling and community disruption.
Community Anxiety and Local Response
New Orleans City Council member Lesli Harris said the operation has caused fear among local residents. She stated that enforcement agents appear to be targeting a broader group than originally indicated, including individuals with legal status or U.S.-born children.
One local woman, who identified herself only as Abby, said her family—originally from Mexico—now sleeps at their family-run restaurant out of fear of being detained while commuting. She has lived in the U.S. for two decades but has not been able to secure legal status.
“Not all of us are criminals,” she said. “We work hard and contribute. We just want a chance to live without fear.”
Louisiana Leadership Responds
While local authorities in New Orleans declined to comment on the operation, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry voiced support during a radio interview, aligning with the Trump administration’s renewed emphasis on immigration enforcement. Landry’s office did not provide further statements when requested.
Operation Expected to Continue Through Year-End
The duration and full scope of the New Orleans operation have not been publicly detailed, though federal officials indicated it is expected to continue through the end of the year.
The initiative is part of a broader federal effort overseen by Border Patrol leadership to ramp up deportations in areas where local jurisdictions have previously limited cooperation. A senior Border Patrol official with experience in similar operations in Charlotte, Chicago, and Los Angeles has reportedly been assigned to oversee the New Orleans campaign.
