Trump Signs Order to Begin Process of Shutting Down U.S. Department of Education

President Trump recently signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of Education to begin preparations for its closure, aiming to shift control of education policies back to individual states. The order instructs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to develop a plan for dismantling the department while ensuring that federal education programs, student aid, and services continue without disruption. Shutting down the department would require congressional approval, making it uncertain when or if the process will be completed.

Supporters argue that eliminating the department will reduce federal oversight and give states more control over education policies and funding. Critics warn that the move could disrupt funding for schools and limit federal protections for students, particularly those in underserved communities.

Established in 1979, the Department of Education oversees federal student loans, education funding, and enforcement of equal access laws. The executive order aligns with broader efforts to reduce the size of the federal government by shifting responsibilities to state and local levels.

While the executive order sets the process in motion, the final decision rests with Congress, where the proposal is expected to face debate and opposition.
