Federal Authorities Charge Florida Man in Connection with Los Angeles Wildfire
A Florida man has been arrested in connection with a devastating wildfire that tore through parts of Los Angeles in early January, killing 12 people and destroying thousands of structures.
Suspect Identified as Former Uber Driver
Federal officials announced that 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was taken into custody at his home in Melbourne, Florida. He faces federal charges for allegedly starting a fire that ultimately grew into the deadly Palisades Fire. His initial court appearance was scheduled to take place in Orlando.
Authorities believe Rinderknecht—who also went by the name Jonathan Rinder—deliberately ignited what was first known as the Lachman Fire shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day. Though initially extinguished, the fire reportedly continued to burn underground until strong winds reignited it, sparking the larger and more destructive Palisades Fire.
Accusations and Behavioral Background
According to the federal complaint, Rinderknecht was driving for Uber on the night of the fire. Two passengers described his behavior as angry and agitated. Officials say he was a resident of the Pacific Palisades area and appeared familiar with the terrain. He allegedly used an open flame to start the fire after dropping off a fare.
Prosecutors also noted several unusual elements in the investigation. Rinderknecht reportedly mentioned growing up in France and was said to play French rap music for passengers. One of the songs in question depicted fire-related imagery. Additionally, authorities say he used artificial intelligence tools to generate apocalyptic-style artwork showing a burning city and mass poverty behind a gate marked with a dollar sign.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Rinderknecht faces a federal charge of destruction of property by means of fire. If convicted, the charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum penalty of 20 years, according to acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.
Damage and Impact
The Palisades Fire was one of the deadliest in recent Los Angeles history. In total, 12 lives were lost and more than 6,800 structures were destroyed across the Pacific Palisades and neighboring Malibu areas. Cleanup and rebuilding efforts are still ongoing, with many residents struggling to recover.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that they are working to provide justice for those affected by the tragedy.
