Longtime Film Veteran Passes Away in Palm Springs
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — German actor Udo Kier, known for his decades-spanning work in avant-garde European films and offbeat Hollywood roles, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 81. His partner, artist Delbert McBride, confirmed his death at their home in Palm Springs.
Kier starred in more than 200 films over the course of his career, earning a reputation as a fearless performer willing to take on eccentric and controversial roles.
Breakthrough Roles and Collaborations with Andy Warhol
Kier rose to prominence in the early 1970s through collaborations with Andy Warhol and filmmaker Paul Morrissey. He starred in the lead roles of two stylized horror films: Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) and Blood for Dracula (1974). These provocative reinterpretations of classic monster tales cemented his place in cult cinema.
European Roots and Fassbinder Connection
Born in Cologne, Germany, during World War II, Kier began his film career in Europe. He formed a professional bond with iconic German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, appearing in several of his works, including Lili Marleen and The Third Generation. These projects established Kier’s status as a key figure in New German Cinema.
U.S. Recognition Through Gus Van Sant and Hollywood Films
American audiences were introduced to Kier in a broader way through director Gus Van Sant, who cast him in the 1991 film My Own Private Idaho, a modern drama loosely based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV. This role helped Kier obtain a SAG card and broadened his opportunities in U.S. cinema.
He went on to appear in supporting roles in notable mainstream films, including:
- Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
- Armageddon
- Blade
Lifelong Partnership with Lars von Trier
Kier maintained a close working relationship with Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier, appearing in multiple projects over several decades:
- Breaking the Waves
- Dancer in the Dark
- Dogville
- Melancholia
- Nymphomaniac: Vol. II
Their collaborations often explored dark psychological and philosophical themes.
Kier’s Work in Art, Music, and Recent Films
Beyond film, Kier also participated in Madonna’s early 1990s projects, appearing in her music videos and controversial photo book Sex. In recent years, he remained active in international cinema. His final major appearance was in The Secret Agent, which earned actor Wagner Moura a top acting award at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
Life Beyond the Screen
Kier lived between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, residing in a repurposed mid-century library. He was a regular presence at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and was known for his interests in art, architecture, and collecting.
In a 2024 interview, Kier remarked, “I liked the attention, so I became an actor”—a simple summary of a career marked by bold choices and enduring influence in global cinema.
